Puzzles To Remember

PUZZLES TO REMEMBER is a 501(c)3 organization that provides puzzles to nursing homes, veterans facilities, and other facilities that care for Alzheimer's and dementia patients. Puzzles To Remember was founded in 2008 by Max Wallack, who recognized the calming effect of puzzles and many other benefits on people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Max graduated from Boston University, Summa Cum Laude, in 2015, and from Harvard Medical School in 2020.

Beginning in 2020, Hailey Richman is the Executive Director of PuzzlesToRemember. Since 2011, Hailey has been distributing puzzles to nursing facilities around the globe. Hailey also spends time doing the puzzles with nursing home residents. She always brightens their days.  Hailey is also the founder of KidCaregivers.com, where she provides advice for children dealing with dementia in their family members. Hailey has begun a program called PuzzleTime which involves volunteer students going to nursing facilities and doing puzzles with their residents. Max serves as a mentor to the KidCaregivers program.

If you have puzzles that you would like to donate, please contact us at Puzzles2Remember@gmail.com and we will find a location near you where you can bring your puzzles. We can also provide you with a donation letter so that you can claim the value of your puzzles as a tax deduction.

A Special Memory From Woman's Day Magazine in 2018

Share

Such a special memory! Grandma and I were in the September 2018 issue of Woman's Day magazine. I was overjoyed about getting our story published. It could not have happened without my dear friend Lynda Everman's help! I was happy to share with other families that kids who are caregivers are not alone! There are actually 1.8 million young people who are caring for a family member with Alzheimer's disease

Kevin Aldridge went on a trip to Brazil and implemented PUZZLE TIME there!

Share

Here are Kevin's words: "Implementing Puzzle Time in Brazil was a success! I worked with two senior living facilities there—Residencial Longévité and Abrigo Mariana Magalhães (AMMA). Both homes were very receptive towards the project and the residents were amazing as well. In addition to implementation, I trained volunteers there and also the staff members at the homes to continue the project. Also, we were able to consolidate all the puzzles into our baggages so there was no extra baggage fee. Attached below is a google drive link to photos and videos of the visits. Thank you so much for all the puzzles, support, and effort for expanding Puzzle Time!" If you are visiting another country and would like to start the Puzzle Time there, please email us at Kidcaregivers@gmail.com. The smiling faces and hugs are all that we need to see what a success it was! Here is a link to his Google Drive to see more pictures: #

Puzzle Solving With People Living With Advanced Dementia

Share

Alzheimer's disease is progressive and our loved ones will worsen as time goes on. However, they can solve jigsaw puzzles at all stages! Here are some tips: 1) There are NO rules. You do not have to solve the puzzle! The point is to have fun together. 2) Hand the puzzle piece to the resident. 3) Point to where it belongs. 4) Give the person a chance to put it in, if not, do it for them. 5) TALK - I made conversation about birds, while my puzzle partner listened and sometimes smiled. My volunteer, Sofiya, talked about Monopoly and how she loves to play it. 6) Simple wooden puzzles also bring joy.

The CHANGE Act (S.1692/H.R. 3354)

Share

I have gone in the past to Washington DC to speak to my representatives about the bipartisan bill that would provide the tools to accurately detect Alzheimer's in its earliest stages, accelerate progress towards prevention strategies, early diagnosis, disease-modifying treatments, and hopefully a cure! Congress needs to hear from ALL of us. PLEASE send your message to your Senator and Representative and let us continue to push for the passage of this critical bill. Please click the link to email your representatives. I suggest that you write about your story to make it more personal. But you do not have to do that. There is a template to use. CLICK HERE:

Riley's Way Foundation This week’s Kind Leader Spotlight shines on Hailey Richman! Taking her own family’s experience with Alzheimer’s and turning it into an opportunity to support others in similar circumstances, Hailey started Kid Caregivers, an organization that supports and empowers children who are acting as caregivers. She partners with Puzzles To Remember, an organization that provides puzzles to facilitate care for people with Alzheimer's disease. “I want all kids to know that, don't think just because you're a kid that you can't make a difference” We celebrate her for empowering kids and adults alike to act with compassion and creating a #kindertomorrow! Shout Out To Our Special Long Island Ambassador Jake Guttman!

Share

We mentioned Jake before...He is the amazing Ambassador who spearheaded the extremely generous puzzle donation from BETHPAGE FEDERAL CREDIT UNION. He did something even more extraordinary. He purchased specialized Springbok Alzheimer's puzzles with his OWN allowance money to be distributed for Global Youth Service Day. You read correctly folks, his own money. He could have used his money to buy cool things like XBOX games or sneakers, etc. Instead, he chose to help diverse people living with Alzheimer's disease. We cannot thank you enough, Jake! We are so lucky and grateful to have you!

Why Did Grandma Leave Her Underwear In the Refrigerator by Dr. Max Wallack (My Mentor!)

Share

I am extremely lucky to have a mentor named Dr. Max Wallack! His great grandma Gertrude and my grandma Ruth both had Alzheimer's disease. Both of us are only children, and we were both CAREGIVERS. That was our bond. Dr. Max graduated from Harvard Medical School, and is now in his medical residency. He wants to be a neuroradiologist. A neuroradiologist studies x-rays, CT scans, MRIs PET scans, etc to see how the brain is doing. They can see early stages of Alzheimer's disease and other issues in the brain, their work is very very important!

Alzheimer's disease you better watch out! Dr. Max Wallack is on the case! Dr. Max wrote the book "Why Did Grandma Leave Her Underwear in the Refrigerator?" to help kids learn about Alzheimer's disease. He based the book on me and my grandmother!
Here is a video of me reading the book when I was 7 years old! Click the link to order it!
